ANDI’S GALLERY AND ITS POSITION IN INDOESIAN ART
In its eighteenth birthday, Andi’s Gallery has succeeded in forming synergy between market demands and the needs for discourse. The gallery becomes important for the development of Indonesian Art.
There are several perceptions considering that a private galleries in Indonesia give more attention to the needs of the art market. This perception certainly does not apply to Andi’s Gallery. Look at the several exhibition programs presented by Andi’s Gallery that prove that the gallery concerns with discourse.
Participating in the Discouse of Contemporary Arts
Only one year after its opening, Andi’s Gallery presented a phenomenal art exhibition titled “Super Realist Exhibition.” Today, the genre of super realism is so strong and yet Andi’s Gallery presented it 17 years ago in 1993. The exhibition with Sudarmaji as curator was the first exhibition of its kind in Indonesia. In the catalog, Sudarmaji wrote, that “the exhibition consciously assembled and stimuted the development of super realism.” It is hoped the the further development with hook growth.” Today, super realism has developed fast..
In the same year. Andis Gallery presented an art exhibition titled “In Between (Loncat Pagar)”. Mike Susanto, the curator wrote that this exhibition was a study to trace and see the effect of a process an artist experiencing with various media. In 1995 Andi’s Gallery working together with Jim Supangkat, the curator, presented an art exhibition titled. “3 Seniman Kontemporer Indonesia” ( Three Indonesian Contemporary Artists). Then instalation works were controversial and yet Andi’s Gallery presented an exhibition of it.
One year after we mentioned the term “contemporary”, Andi’s Gallery presented an exhibition of Contemporary tapestry, and the curator of this exhibition, Mamannoor choose eight tapestry artists from Bandung. What is interesting is that Andi’s Gallery once again presented what was not in the mainstream.
In 2009 context of contemporary art, Andi's Gallery organized the exhibition "Drawing Contemporary Indonesia", presents 54 artists. The exhibition will take place at the National Gallery of Indonesia, Jl Medan Merdeka Timur 14 Jakarta, 16 to 24 June 2009. (***)
